Full-Time Orthopedic Trauma Physician Assistant – Boulder, Colorado

Nature of Work
This is a unique opportunity to work in a busy academic orthopedic trauma and fracture surgery practice with one of the premier orthopedic trauma groups in the front range of Colorado. The position will be a full-time exempt (non-hourly) Instructor -Physician Assistant position in the Department of Orthopedics. The employee will work in the Denver/Aurora area of Colorado. The position is not eligible for tenure.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the Director of Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery at the University of Colorado Hospital, Dr. Jason Stoneback. Supervision will include training and oversight for the position’s responsibilities.
Supervision Provided
The appointee will not supervise any employees.
Working Conditions
This position works primarily Monday-Friday with occasional on-call shifts during nights and weekends. The Physician Assistant will cover a variety of clinical areas including the Emergency Department, inpatient units, operating room, and outpatient clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Physician Assistant are outlined below:
- Obtains detailed history and performs physical examinations on assigned patients; assesses and treats acute/chronic medical problems and provides direct patient care to a specified patient population. Writes prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed. Completes FMLA paperwork, school notes, and other forms as needed.
- Assists in providing outpatient clinic, Emergency Department, inpatient floor, pre-op, intra-op and post-op care; writes appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs. There will be fracture reduction, casting, splinting, and dressing required.
- Performs emergency life saving procedures in cases such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, massive hemorrhage, or similar emergencies. Provides fracture reductions in ER or office as needed, but not conscious sedation. Perform joint aspirations and injections.
- Notifies attending physician on call, house physician on call, or supervising physician regarding any unusual or unexpected events or problems requiring direct physician consultation.
- Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
- Coordinates the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic. Works with the team to ensure smooth operation of the clinic.
- Writes progress notes indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; maintains other office and hospital records as required.
- Provides health education to patients and families.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature reviews, in-service meetings, and workshops.
- Participates (attend, present, organize) in educational programs of the CU Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery Division including weekly academic conference, journal club and symposia.
- Contributes to community outreach events including giving educational talks and visiting referring provider offices.
- Assist orthopaedic surgeon in operating room setting.
- Help develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.
- Assist in preparing and giving PowerPoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local and national meetings.
- May perform clinical research related to specific conditions and assist in preparation of manuscripts for publication.
- Must become proficient in documentation and use of the Electronic Medical Record, and be an available resource to other health care providers.
- Will assist in ER and hospital call coverage. Telephone triage of urgent patients will be a critical function.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- State of Colorado Certified Physician’s Assistant; Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician’s Assistants
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification; certification pending, as documented by temporary certificate.
- CPR Certified
- The applicant must be self-directed, detail-oriented, and adaptable in a high intensity environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
- Strong desire to work in Orthopedic Trauma and Fracture Surgery.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience preferred. May be willing to train new grad with previous hospital/ortho experience or exceptional qualities.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related Technical, Scientific, or Engineering discipline
- 6 months to 1 year experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Salary Range for this position
Salary and competitive benefits commensurate with experience, with salary range of $80,000 – $95,000 plus additional benefits. An incentive bonus plan is an additional benefit.
