Job Description

Shift:

PA’s are scheduled in general 5-7 nights 7P shifts per month. All Shifts are split among all PA’s; normally, PAs are either straight nights or straight days. Rotations are welcomed, shifts are usually 12s, 7a-7p, 10a-10pm, 11a-11p, 2p-2a, 7p-7a; they can request all 7p (nights), otherwise they work rotating shifts. As we are 24-7 the schedules vary based on the dept. needs.

Services for work weeks averaging 40 work-hours per week. Possible shifts may be any consecutive 8 – 12 hours. Duty will be performed Sunday through Saturday. This schedule may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, Federal and Training Holidays. Shift schedules may be adjusted to meet mission and or department needs at the Facility . On-call shifts are not required. Total number of hours shall not exceed 80 hours in a two week period. Overtime is not authorized.

Requirements:
Minimum one (1) year of clinical experience in Emergency Medicine to include two (2) years of primary care experience treating patients of all ages for routine, urgent and emergent diseases and injuries to include a minimum one (1) year of clinical experience in Emergency Medicine within the last twelve (12) Months in Primary Care, Urgent care or Emergency Care.

Graduate of an educational program accredited by the Committee of Allied Health Education and Accreditation on behalf of the American Medical Association.

Graduate Physician Assistant (preferably, a residency trained Emergency Medicine Physician Assistant).

• Physician Assistant shall perform and provide medical examination and treatment
• The Physician Assistant shall be responsible for providing immediate evaluation and management of routine, urgent and emergent illness as they occur.
• Physician Assistant shall have sufficient specific training in Emergency Medicine and shall be able to adequately assess, diagnose, stabilize and treat diseases and injuries to include, but not limited to the following: Skin, Head, Ears, Eyes, Nose, Throat, Mouth, Teeth, Neck, Cardiovascular System, Pulmonary System, Gastrointestinal System, Lymphatic System, Musculoskeletal System, Genitourinary System, Reproductive System, Psychiatric Disease, Central Nervous System, Endocrine System, and Peripheral Nervous System.
• The Physician Assistant shall be able to recognize those conditions beyond his/her level of training and/or experience and consult a physician in an appropriate and timely manner.
• Physician Assistant performing services shall have sufficient training and experience to be able to adequately perform credentialed medical procedures to include, but not limited to the following:
• Administer intravenous, intramuscular and subcutaneous medications; Anoscopy; Arthrocentesis (excludes hip); Burn management; Cultures (throat/wound); Ear irrigation; Eye irrigation; Foreign Body Removal (rectal, extremity and uncomplicated ear/nose); Incision and drainage of abscesses & thrombosed hemorrhoids; Ingrown toenail removal initial interpretation of radiographs; Initial management of, envenomations and exposure to hazardous materials; Initial management of orthopedic extremity injuries, uncomplicated (splints); Interpret laboratory results; Laceration repair, complex (excludes flexor tendon repair and repair of neurovascular damage), Laceration repair (simple); Local Anesthesia (topical/ infiltration) and Regional Anesthesia (digits); Nebulizer treatment; Ocular tonometry, fluorescein and slip lamp examination; Perform venous puncture for laboratory studies; Secure and maintain an adequate airway; Secure and maintain adequate intravenous access by peripheral routes; Suture Removal; Wound care (evaluate and direct management).
• Collect and record, in proper format, medical and social historical data appropriate to the patient’s condition.
• Perform a general physical examination. Record the findings in proper format and determine medical qualification for various purposes.
• Become familiar with the hospital formulary and prescribe pharmaceuticals according to the drugs listed. The Pharmacy Service will provide instruction to all prescribing providers on substitutions of generic drugs.
• Generate and maintain proper medical records on beneficiaries to whom treatment is provided IAW AR 40-66, Medical Records and Quality Assurance Administration. All records generated in-the performance of this contract remains the property of the government.
• Follow the established operating procedures of the clinics where services are provided. Providers shall participate in the quality control activities to include the quality control activities established for each department or clinic the provider works.
