Job Description

Job Summary: Provides inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services, including patient histories and physicals, treatments, medications, surgical procedures, pre-operative and post-operative care, etc. to patients under the supervision of a licensed physician.

Job Duties:

1. Conducts oneself in a manner which promotes quality and service excellence for patients, physicians, staff, and visitors and contributes to the spirit of teamwork within the Practice.

2. Sees patients in a clinic setting, performing routine medical assessments and treatments, which may include: obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, counseling patients, etc. and performs minor outpatient surgical procedures in a clinic setting when appropriate and documents all activities in accordance with established policies and protocols.

3. Performs patient pre-operative hospital and clinic day surgery admission histories and physicals for surgical patients. Forms patient assessment and develops preliminary patient care plan and performs and documents all activities in accordance with established policies and protocols.

4. Assists in surgical procedures as directed for a wide variety of surgical cases delegated by the supervising physician when the service is within the physician assistant’s skill set and within the supervising physician’s scope of practice.

5. Provides post-operative care to patients by evaluating patient’s physical condition to ensure no secondary complications have occurred due to surgery, removes sutures and/or staples, aspirates wound fluids, provides specific patient care as needed in accordance with established policies and protocols.

6. Records discharge summaries for patient’s using the electronic medical records system to update patient records and for billing purposes.

7. Makes hospital patient visits (rounds) with physician and/or independently to monitor patient’s current physical condition.

8. Coordinates patient’s hospital discharge process including explaining current condition and follow-up care, usage of medications and interacts with family members and/or other health care professionals relative to patient needs and in accordance with established policies and protocols.

9. Performs other nonsurgical health care tasks that are normally taught in courses of training approved by the board, that are consistent with the training and experience of the physician assistant and that have been properly delegated by the supervising physician.

10. Orders, prescribes, dispenses and administers drugs and medical devices that are delegated by the supervising physician and which are defined in the federal controlled substances act.

11. Protects patients’ rights by maintaining confidentiality of personal and financial information in order to comply with HIPPA and Practice requirements.

12. Performs all other duties or assume responsibilities as directed by the supervising physician.

Skills and Qualifications:

Graduate of an AMA approved PA program having passed the NCCPA exam and currently licensed in the State of Arizona. Current CPR, ACLS and PALS certification and DEA. Two (2) years’ experience preferred as a PA in a surgical setting.
