The NMC manages the Merchant Mariner Licensing and Documentation (MLD) program and is responsible for implementing policies related to one or more missions of the United States Coast Guard. The Medical Evaluation Division is responsible for determining 220,000 mariners’ suitability to serve in the capacities specified by the licenses, documents, certificates of registry, rating endorsements, officer endorsements, and Standard for Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsements for which they apply. The position involves performing medical evaluations and administrative functions to support the medical evaluation of Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) application packages, which is essential to the success of the Coast Guard’s mission of ensuring the safe operation of commercial vessels.
