Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree. Certification and licensure in New York State as a Physician Assistant. Possess good interpersonal skills. Highly motivated, reliable and computer literate.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in Orthopaedics.

Brief Description of Duties: The Physician’s Assistant will provide direct patient care to selected patients, both inpatient and outpatient under the supervision of the Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief and other attending Orthopaedic physicians. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Take a patient history, perform a physical examination and make an assessment and diagnosis based on this information, and initiate, review and revise treatment and therapy plans, and record and present data in a manner meaningful to the supervising physician.
  • Perform approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for orthopaedic patients.
  • Provide patient care services to the orthopaedic patients at any of the Orthopaedic Practice Locations, the Ambulatory Care Pavilion, the Emergency Department and the Operating Room, under the direction of the responsible Orthopaedic surgeon.
  • In collaboration with the Orthopaedist, coordinate pre-hospital evaluations for admission.
  • Assist the clinical and resident staff in assessing patient status, establishing diagnosis and developing care plans.
  • Function in a collegial relationship with medical staff and other disciplines in coordinating all aspects of patient care.
  • Make referrals to other health care providers and/or consult the physician for further definitive therapy.
  • Identify and participate in the monitoring of Quality Assurance indicators.
  • Develop and present pertinent educational programs to the medical and resident staff.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary continuing education courses pertaining to Orthopaedic patient care.
  • Participate in the preparation and presentation of scientific papers, workshops and seminars.
  • Serve as a consultant to other programs at University Hospital and its’ community.

Special Notes: These are full time positions. The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. *This position is located in Tech Park, East Setauket.
