Full-Time Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

Job Description

Reporting to the Medical Director of Mental Health and Substance Use Services, and working with a supervising psychiatrist, the Nurse Practitioner provides primary and mental health care and services to persistent and seriously mentally ill clients. Primary responsibilities include psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, pharmacologic (including depot atypical antipsychotic medications) and other forms of treatment (such as motivational interviewing) of mental health clients. Substance use evaluation and referral is also an essential function of the position. The work environment varies between the clinic setting or off site in clients’ homes, Residential Support Services (RSS) facilities, or board and care residences depending on the program they are assigned to, such as HOPE (older adult program), STAR (forensic case management), Children’s Mental Health and/or Shelter Plus (housing homeless). There are also opportunities in the Child and Adolescence System of Care.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in mental health treatment both therapeutic and psychopharmacologic and is expected to be fully trained and experienced in medical evaluation, examination and treatment of mental health and substance use patients. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a medical environment such as an emergency room, psychiatric emergency or medical clinic. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a mastery of the protocols outlining their scope of practice, work effectively and collaboratively in a team with different disciplines and with clients from different age groups. Additionally, the ideal candidate, in consultation with the supervising psychiatrist, will recognize and respond accordingly in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients. He/she will be psychologically minded, able to consult with supervisors when appropriate, and be flexible enough to work with a wide variety of clients and conditions.
