Job Description

Physician Assistant- Orthopedic (Clinical & Surgical)

 

Work Shift: DAY (8am-6pm Monday-Friday)

JOB SUMMARY:

Functions as a mid-level practitioner maintaining and promoting the health of the patient in a surgical and orthopedic clinical setting. Affects direct patient care according to the Board of Physician Assistant Examiners in the State of Texas and the Athletic Orthopedic & Knee Center policies and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Coordinates appropriate, timely patient care under physician supervision, for a defined patient population(s), focusing on identified expected unit/optimal outcomes individualized to the patient.

2.Coordinates patient care between healthcare providers.

3.Conducts comprehensive health assessments (initial, ongoing, discharge) identifies normal/abnormal health characteristics, develops plan of care, initiates appropriate interventions, and evaluates care outcomes on defined patient populations.

4.Performs delegated functions under physician supervision, such as differential diagnosis, use of prescriptive authority, and treatment according to practice guidelines, protocols, and/or standing orders. Accepts accountability for outcomes in healthcare.

5.Performs invasive diagnostic or therapeutic procedures necessary for defined patient populations.

6.Uses critical thinking skills and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Board of Physicians Assistants. Collaborates with healthcare team members to manage/coordinate patient care.

7.Demonstrates leadership as clinical resource, interdisciplinary consult, and patient advocate. May serve as preceptor for Physician Assistant students and medical residents.

8.Performs pre-operative histories, physical exams and inpatient admissions. Identifies patients prior to surgery. Helps position patients in the operating room.

9.Surgical first assisting to include retracting, suctioning, suturing, cauterizing and performing other surgical duties directed by the physician.

10.Provides school coverage during sports seasons with partner community schools.

11.Promotes quality health care through integration of current research into practice and participation in research activities.

12.Maintains current licensure and credentials. Remains current in practice.

13.Participates in professional activities such as research presentation and publications.

14.Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

1.Graduate from accredited PA program and successful completion of NCCPA examination

2.Licensed by the Texas Board of Physician Assistants

3.Prescriptive authority privileges through the State of Texas

4.American Heart Association BLS and ACLS required

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

1.Required minimum of one (1) years of clinical experience and one (1) year of surgical experience.

2.Must be able to communicate effectively in English

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

1.Licensed and Credentialed by the Texas Board of Physician Assistants

2.Prescriptive authority privileges through the State of Texas
