Job Title:                Nurse Practitioner

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Assesses, plans and provides comprehensive patient care independently or in autonomous collaboration with other health professionals.  Major functional areas include: practitioner, consultant, educator, and researcher. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals requiring creativity and latitude.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  (include but not limited to):

 

A.            Practitioner

 

Works to establish and to promote a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.

 

2.             Performs a complete or interim needs assessment.

 

3.             Based on protocols, standing orders, or in collaboration with a physician, arranges for necessary laboratory, radiologic and/or other diagnostic tests to complete the assessment.

 

4.             Refers deviations from normal to the appropriate health care professional.

 

5.             Collaborates, as needed, with other health care professionals in the formulation and initiation of a health care plan.

 

6.             Evaluates outcome of the healthcare plan and modifies as needed.

 

7.             Serves as a role model by demonstrating expertise and comprehensive knowledge in the delivery of healthcare to patients and their families.

 

8.            Facilitates discharge and follow up care.

 

Assumes responsibility for the development, implementation, and evaluation of Standards for Advanced Nursing Practice.

 

Performs medical functions delegated by and done under the control and supervision of a physician licensed by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners (as defined by the Board of Nurse Examiners for The State of Texas, Advanced Practitioner Guidelines, Regulation 221.6 [10]).

 

B.             Consultant

 

1.             Serves as a clinical consultant to other healthcare professionals.

 

Collaborates with all members of the health care team in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating comprehensive healthcare for patients and their families.

 

3.             Assists with the evaluation of educational activities to determine their impact on the quality of care.

 

4.             Participates in the educational activities of the Advanced Nurse Practitioner Council.

 

5.             Participates in planning, development, and presentation of special projects.

 

C.             Educator

 

1.             Assesses the learning needs of patients, families, and staff in collaboration with all members of the healthcare team.

 

2.             Plans, provides and coordinates patient/family and staff education for those involved in the care of patients.

 

3.             Assists with the evaluation of educational activities to determine their impact on the quality of care.

4.             Recognizes self-development needs and seeks out resources or experiences that promote professional growth.

 

D.            Researcher

 

1.             Reviews and utilizes current literature and research findings relevant ANP

to the healthcare of patients and their families.

 

2.             Assists with implementing research findings and monitoring the impact on patient care outcomes.

 

3.             Adheres to the ANA Human rights guidelines for nurses in clinical and other research.

 

4.             Assists with product evaluation.

 

Reporting to this position are:   No direct reports

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS  (Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

 

A performance appraisal will be conducted within the first 90-120 days of employment and annually in the first quarter of the calendar year.  The appropriate supervising anesthesiologist at the facility will conduct the appraisal.

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.

Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State of Texas.

Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

Recognition as Advanced Nurse Practitioner by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners within six (6) months of hire date.

At least two (2) years experience in anesthesia, pain management or related specialized area of nursing.

Membership and active participation in professional organizations.

Board certification or board eligibility and completion of a certification exam within one (1) year of employment.

Communicate well with the public

Ability to read, write, and speak English

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE

 

Graduate from accredited program for NP.  May require at least one-year experience in a hospital setting.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination.  Involves standing and walking.  Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports.  Requires occasional lifting and supporting patients of any weight.  Requires exposure to bodily fluids.
